Control Systems

Substation Automation Systems (SAS) – is a set of hardware and software, providing tools for control of technological processes in various areas of industrial production or services.

In the energy sector the automation systems allow to significantly optimize the management processes of generation, transmission and distribution of energy.

The purpose of SAS is the necessity to improve the efficiency, reliability and safety of the production process, thereby improving the quality and reducing the cost of the final product.

In the today's world the control systems are shared on different levels of the hierarchy.

Levels of distributed system for electrical supply:

  • Business level;
  • Dispatching level;
  • Local level (production unit);
  • Protection and control devices for primary equipment ;
  • Primary equipment of technological process.

Hierarchy of automation facilities to control of electric power distribution.

The aims of the system development:

  • Providing the user with the set of functions for equipment control;
  • Providing the user with the set of functions for monitor of equipment condition and main technological processes.

Implementation result:

  • Significant increase of reliability of equipment operation;
  • Increase of safety;
  • Significant increase of information capacity for equipment operation ;
  • Increase of economic efficiency by reducing the percentage of failures.

Local systems:

  • Autotransformers with monitoring system;
  • Switching equipment with control and condition monitoring functionality;
  • Modern CT and VT;
  • Relay protection and automation IED;
  • Substation Automation System;
  • Communication system;
  • Various auxiliary systems.

Dispatching control centers

Aims of implementation and expected result:

  • Provision of network analysis and monitoring for the submission of required data to operator;
  • Significant increase of operational reliability and the system security;
  • Possibility of fast response to extreme changes in the system;
  • Provision of information redundancy on the system status;
  • Optimization of investments and management of energy distribution;

The following tasks could be solved by a such systems:

  • Express analysis of the network:
    • Calculation of the network power flow for generation and consumption;
    • Single, two and three phases short-circuit current calculation;
    • Operation analyses of protections taking into account the network selectivity.
  • Monitoring of generation startup;
  • Precise assessment of network condition and load forecast for planning of operations and analysis in case of emergencies;
  • Relay protection and automation setting;
  • Control devices of switching units.

Completed projects

2012-2014 – Expansion and reconstruction of SS 330/110/10 kV “Pivnichna”: Substation Automation System for SS 330/110/10 kV “Pivnichna”

Scope of works:

  • Design (basic and detailed design);
  • Supply of SAS equipment (servers, switching equipment, RTU);
  • Assembling of system cabinets;
  • System network configuration;
  • RTU and server equipment configuration;
  • System database population;
  • System interfaces creation;
  • Configuration of communications between various control devices in the power system;
  • Preparation of operating documentation;
  • Maintenance services of the system.

General description

The project is based on IEC61850 standard. The modern relay protection and automation equipment manufactured by ABB, GE and Siemens, fully integrated into automation control system, were installed in the substation.

Substation automation control system is based on MicroSCADA Pro 9.3 software. The system implements algorithms for control of switching devices and interfaces to monitor the status of the main substation equipment.

Provided information exchange facilities between the substation and power system dispatch center. After the system installation our specialists provided training for substation and power system personnel, as well as continue to provide service support.

2013-2014 OHL 750 kV “Zaporozhskaya NPP – Kakhovska” with SS 750 kV “Kakhovska” and diversions OHL 330kV. SAS 330 kV SS "Kakhovska"

Scope of works:

  • Design (basic and detailed design);
  • Supply of SAS equipment (servers, switching equipment, RTU);
  • Assembling of system cabinets;
  • System network configuration;
  • RTU and server equipment configuration;
  • System database population;
  • System interfaces creation;
  • Preparation of automation control algorithm
  • Configuration of communications between various control devices in the power system;
  • Preparation of operating documentation;
  • Maintenance services of the system.

General Description:

In general the project is based on the same principals as previous. The general concept is based on IEC 61850 standard. Addition in this system is the development of fully automatic algorithms for typical switching operations.

Another feature of this project is adopted concept of relay protection and automation arrangement in stand alone buildings for relay panels, Located nearby the switchyard. This solution significantly reduced capital expenditure for the purchase and cable laying.
